The residential area

The residential area and the district

Mariehem / Mariestrand

Mariestrand is a relatively new residential area (2007) located on the northern part of the Nydala lake, on the side of the Europe road E4. It belongs to the district of Mariehem in Umeå. Mariestrand is made up of Vingslaget and Sångfågeln, which is divided by a bike track to the Nydala lake.

Mariehem is located approximately 4 km from the center of Umea. It is a vibrant neighborhood with:

- grocery stores (ICA Kvantum, Coop Nära, Mariehems livs)

- coffee shop (Aptit)

- pharmacy (Apotek Hjärtat)

- hairdressers (Silver Saxen, Klippsalongen, Trend by Wixners)

- restaurants (Ängen, Maria, Örnen, Burger King)

- health center (Mariehems hälsocentral)

- elementary schools (Mariaskolan, Mariehemsskolan, Språkskolan)

- preschools (Lockropet, Myran, Ejderdunet, Lärkdrillen, Nordstjärnan, Språkskolan)

- gym (Umeå Sport & Motion, Tenton)

- buses to the hospital, the university and the city center (no. 1, 2 and 7)

The district was the first in Umeå where pedestrian and bicycle paths were separated from car traffic. It consists mostly of multi-family houses (apartments) built in the million-program during the 1960s with whitewashed facades and is therefore sometimes called the "white district". The apartments are largely owned by Umeå's largest landlord AB Bostaden, but there are also several tenant-owner associations and privately owned apartment houses. In the southwestern part of Mariehem there are also a large number of private homes in the form of townhouse lengths and smaller villas. The proximity to the university means that there are also some student housing. In recent years, many new condominiums have been added on Mariestrand and Marielund. The population at Mariehem is mixed; families with small children, pensioners, students and others live here.

Mariehem's location is advantageous for those interested in nature and the outdoors as the Nydala recreation area is close by with camping (First Camp), temperate outdoor swimming pool (Umelagun), sandy beaches, barbecue areas, roaming areas, illuminated exercise tracks, fishing, boat and canoe rental. Mariehem also has Umeå's only ski slope called Bräntbergsbacken. Below Bräntberget are the Mariehem fields, which are large fine green areas. There is also a large football pitch, Frisbee golf course, beach volleyball court and more. At Mariehem there are also rugby pitches, BMX track, mini golf, cross-country skiing, of which one at Nydala has artificial snow. Mariehem SK is the district's sports club with a lot of youth football on the program.
